Whenever you have helped the least of these my brothers, you have helped me."

Our Mission to Educate

Education is the key that frees children from the imprisonment of hunger and disease. Without basic education, children may be subject to a life of poverty. Even in the advanced world of the 21st century, over 250 million children are denied fundamental skills in reading and writing. As a result, thousands are condemned to a life of begging and living on the streets.

In answer to this crisis, Lutherans from around the world are responding to give the gift of education. In the “favela” slums of Sao Paulo, for example, the JELA Foundation works with the Lutheran-affiliated Reconciliation Project to provide day education programs to children. The very young are taught basic reading, writing and mathematics while older children are taught special work-related skills in subjects such as cooking, sewing, carpentry and hairdressing. By learning specific skills, youth have a chance to live lives of self-reliance and dignity.

In a rural village northwest of Phnom Penh, Cambodia, Lutherans responded to a need for a three-room classroom for primary school children. Now hundreds of children can attend class each day and escape the cycle of poverty that has devastated families there for decades.

The mission of the JELA Foundation is to help children help themselves. We believe that education will give real hope, real opportunities, and real chances to succeed in life. You are invited to join our efforts to help provide an education to children in need. While we cannot change the whole world, we can change the lives of hundreds, perhaps thousands of children. With your support, we are committed to using 100 percent of all donations to build more classrooms, hire quality teachers and purchase needed books. Thank you for joining our mission.
