Although highly affluent and well-educated, Japan has one of the highest suicide rates in the industrialized world. In addition, almost 20% of the population is age 65 or over and this, plus one of the world’s lowest birthrates, has created numerous social issues, including questions about the quality of life and proper care for the elderly.

Japan – Seven Complete Course in Pastoral Harp Ministry

The JELA Foundation is pleased to announce that seven individuals have recently completed its 18-month course in Pastoral Harp Ministry, known as the Lyra Precaria Program. In this program, participants study voice and harp preparation to minister in hospice and hospital settings. seven graduates were commissioned for this ministry in a special ceremony held in Tokyo. second group of students began the program in April 2008. The Director of the Lyra Precaria Program is ELCA missionary Carol Sack.


Japan - Looking Back on JELA Growth; 1999 – 2007

On March 31st 2007, Dr. Lowell Gretebeck stepped down as Director of JELA after more than seven years of service. “We have accomplished so much in these seven years,” says Dr. Gretebeck. “JELA has become a model of success in both outreach to society and the involvement of people. Japan – No, our world! – needs more organizations, like JELA, that encourage compassion towards the disadvantaged.”
